Lille have secured their place in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season after defeating Marseille in a thrilling match at Stade Velodrome on Wednesday evening.

The French giants, who had already qualified for the group stages of this year's competition, were looking to secure top spot in Group E and progress directly into the second qualifying round.

And they did just that, coming from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 thanks to goals from Nabil Fekir and Jonathan David in the first half and a late winner from David in the second.

It was a remarkable comeback for Marseille, who had led by one goal before the break through a penalty kick from Dimitri Payet.

But Lille refused to give up and fought back, with Fekir equalising in the 65th minute and then scoring the winner four minutes later to seal their place in the conference league.

The result means that Lille will now face either Dynamo Kyiv or Rostov in the play-off round, where they will hope to book their place in the Europa Conference League next season.

"It's a fantastic feeling," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier afterwards. "We knew it would be tough against Marseille but we didn't give up and we came out on top."

The victory also marked a historic moment for the club, as it is only the second time in their history that they have won both the Ligue 1 title and the European Cup/Champions League.

For Marseille, it was a disappointing end to a campaign which saw them finish fourth in Ligue 1 and reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

But despite the defeat, there were still positives to take away from the game, such as the performances of young players like Jonathan David and Boubacar Kamara.

Overall, it was a thrilling and exciting encounter between two of France's biggest clubs, and one that could well have huge implications for both sides going forward.
